Now that the fall season has shedded all its leaves, winter is rolling in with its chilly breeze. Before you find yourself reaching for your trusty jacket to keep you warm, consider a wardrobe upgrade to welcome the winter. We took notes from the designer runways and compiled a list of trends that will sure be a hit this season.

Hologram

Brave the cold weather this year with a little futuristic flair. Ultra-reflective, high-shine materials and dashes of silver were seen on the runways of the Balmain, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, and Sies Marjan winter fashion shows — soon it will be seen on the streets too.

Checkered
From Michael Kors to Burberry to Versace, checks in different styles and variations graced the runways. Think Cher Horowitz from Clueless, but decked in bolder color-blocked style for a more fun and vibrant look.

Nightwear
Nightwear isn’t just for sleeping anymore. The winter fashion shows this year saw dresses that look like nightgowns, jackets reminiscent of sleeping robes, and suit set you can quite literally sleep in — all characterized with elegance and a hint of sultry courtesy of Bottega Veneta, Y/Project, and Givenchy.

Animal Prints
Animal prints clawed their way into the runways to make everyday pieces shout and howl. Victoria Beckham boldly made a bid for the leopard print in particular, so did Diane Von Furstenberg, Gareth Pugh, and Dolce & Gabbana. Zadig & Voltaire, meanwhile, favored tiger prints.

Knitwear
Bundle up in knitwear that perfectly mixes comfort and elegance. Chanel, Hermes, and Altuzarra all had a say about this winter look, and they’re all oversized pieces in earthy hues adorned with chunky and knitted scarf-like necklines.

Leather
Leather jackets will always be a wardrobe staple, but this season, be prepared to have a new leather favorite to keep yourself warmer. Leather dresses dominated the runways, all in different, wearable styles — short and playful at Miu-Miu, ankle-length and surprisingly grown-up at Loewe, smart and elegant at HermèsTod’s, and Givenchy.
